Early Fall Garden Tasks

Happy Fall, Y’all! The leaves are starting to change but you don’t have to give up on that garden yet! There’s still time to plant a few quick growing fall veggies and garlic. Here’s some garden tasks to do this fall.

  1. Plant some quick growing cool weather veggies-Carrots, radishes, spinach, lettuce and kale for harvest later this fall. Add some Woollets wool pellets with your seeds to keep the soil moist and boost germination. Did you know Carrots can stay in the ground and be harvested until the ground freezes, and even longer if you cover them with straw. Just pull back the straw to harvest.

  2. Plant spring flowering bulbs-Tossing in some Woollets when you plant your bulbs gives them extra nutrition for growing sturdy root systems this fall.

  3. Deadhead your annuals like Snapdragons for one more burst of flowers before frost.

  4. Cut back bearded irises into 4” fans and clean up dead leaves to prevent Iris Borers from overwintering in the debris.

  5. Prune Perennials-As your summer blooming perennials finish blooming, cut them back and dig in 1/2 cup of Woollets around them. The Woollets will break down over the winter and all the nutrients will be readily available when your perennials wake up to start growing in the spring.

  6. Mulch your perennials to protect them from winter damage. Wrapping wool Mulching Fleece around the base and lower trunks of young trees will help protect them from rabbit damage over the winter. Rabbits and deer hate the smell of lanolin.

  7. Consider leaving some habitat-Dead flower stalks and leaves to provide winter habitat for pollinators. Many small native bees like to nap in hollow flower stalks over the winter months. Wait until they have emerged in the warm spring before cutting down and disposing of the stalks.

  8. Divide and transplant perennials-The cooler days of fall is a great time to divide and move perennials.

  9. Bring houseplants back indoors-Before first frost, bring those houseplants back inside. This is a good time to re-pot them if needed. Woollets added to the pots will help protect the plants from the stress of moving back inside to lower light and humidity even if you don’t repot them.
